Virginia Beach School Board Reverses Chromebook Policy for Youngest Students

The Virginia Beach School Board voted 6-5 on June 24 to rescind the compromise Chromebook policy passed at its June 8 meeting, then adopted a stricter version eliminating classroom devices for pre-K through first grade entirely. The reversal removes the shared classroom set of 10 devices for first-grade classrooms that had been included under the prior vote. Virginian-Pilot

The policy reversal drew criticism from board members who called the process confusing and inconsistent. Superintendent Donald Robertson acknowledged the district has no data on the instructional impact. An annual review of student screen time is built into the new policy, and the board indicated older grades remain under consideration.
